Misc Christmas — Wexford Carol

    	    	Вступление

The Wexford Carol (Trad.)

Also known as the Enniscorthy Carol; the Irish language titles
are respectively Carúl Loch Garman or Carúl Inis Córthaidh.

Like many other carols from Britain and Ireland, this has been
fancifully claimed to date from the high middle ages, i.e., the 12th century.

While not THAT old, it's still quite old, either late medeival or early modern,
perhaps dating to the 15th or 16th century (like many well-known Sean-nós songs).

The Irish origin and modal tune against a drone suggest a good
opportunity for DADGAD tuning; try these chord shapes.

[Intro]

[Verse]:

 A D Bm A
Good people all, this Christmas time,
    G D C C/B C
Consider well and bear in mind,
 A D Bm A
what our good God for us has done,
    G D C C/B C D
In sending His belov-ed Son.
D C F
With Mary holy, we should pray,
    Dm Am Asus4
To God with love this Christmas Day.
A D Bm A
In Bethlehem upon that morn,
       G D C D
There was a blessed Messiah born.

[Verse]:

A D Bm A
The night before that happy tide,
     G D C C/B C
the noble virgin and her guide,
 A D Bm A
were long-time seeking up and down,
    G D C D
to find a lodging in the town.
 D C F
But mark how all things came to pass,
     Dm Am Asus4
from every door repelled, alas,
A D Bm A
as was foretold, their refuge all,
     G D C D
Was but a humble ox's stall.

[Verse]:

 A D Bm A
Near Bethlehem did shepherds keep,
  G D C C/B C
their flocks of lambs and feeding sheep,
A D Bm A
to whom God's angels did appear,
  G D C D
which put the shepherds in great fear.
   D C F
"Prepare and go", the angels said,
     Dm Am Asus4
"to Bethlehem, be not afraid.
 A D Bm A
For there you'll find, this happy morn,
    G D C D
a princely Babe, sweet Jesus, born".

[Verse]

 A D Bm A
With thankful heart and joyful mind,
      G D C C/B C
the shepherds went, the babe to find,
A D Bm A
and as God's Angel had foretold,
 G D C D
they did our Saviour Christ behold.
  D C F
Within a manger He was laid,
    Dm Am Asus4
and by his side the virgin maid,
A D Bm A
attending on the Lord of Life,
     G D C D
Who came on Earth to end all strife.

[Verse]

  A D Bm A
There were three wise men from afar,
   G D C C/B C
directed by a glorious star,
A D Bm A
and on they wandered, night and day,
   G D C D
until they came where Jesus lay.
 D C F
And when they came unto that place,
 Dm Am Asus4
where our beloved Messiah lay,
A D Bm A
they humbly cast them at His feet,
      G D C D
with gifts of gold and incense sweet.
