Am G F C

[Verse 1]
C Dm
He was born in Powell Creek, about 1894,
  G F C
A true son of the territory, he was taken by the law.
                             Dm
Fathered by a station owner, baptised by the whites,
G F C
Taken from his mother, to make the whole thing right.
                                      Dm
They moved to South Australia, and he learned to read and write,
       G F C
And in May of 1915, he enlisted for the fight.
                              Dm
He's a blackfella ANZAC, in a war across the sea,
         G F C
And he's fighting for Australia so its people could be free.
                           Dm
Serving a country where he couldn't even vote,
     G F C
They turned a blind eye for him to line up for the boat.
                                                Dm
And while he couldn't drink with whites, and he never questioned why?
       G F C
He was good enough to fight, and to sail away and die.

[Chorus]
Am G F C
Blackfella ANZAC, white enough to take,
         G F C
And he's white enough to risk his life, and die to save his mates
Am G F C
Blackfella ANZAC, thanks for what you gave,
      G F C
But I wish you were remembered, the bravest of the brave

[Verse 2]
                                               Dm
Well four years in the First World War, he was lucky to survive,
    G F C
His machine gun crew all gone, he's the only one alive.
                                 Dm
Then a second crew of mates, all battle scarred and worn,
    G F C
And again for no good, they all too were gone.
                                      Dm
And god he must have suffered for his mates to die that way,
          G F C
There was no black or white, he just got to stay.
                                    Dm
So Fred he'd seen some battles in a long and bloody war,
      G F C
And I wonder if he thought he'd need to even up the score.
                                    Dm
cuz' the POSI years in France, they stared death in the face,
     G F C
They called for volunteers for a maddened, desperate race.
                           Dm
Across the open country to accept his rightful fate,
        G F C
Then to bring the ammo back, well he didn't hesitate

[Chorus]
Am G F C
Blackfella ANZAC, he's white enough to take,
         G F C
And he's white enough to risk his life, and die to save his mates
Am G F C
Blackfella ANZAC, thanks for what you gave,
      G F C
But I wish you were remembered, the bravest of the brave

[Verse 3]
                                              Dm
Well he sent the bravery medal home, but it's lost out on the sea,
    G F C
And don't suppose it matters for what would have to be.
                                   Dm
For back home in Australia, he was just a half-caste black,
    G F C
Who travelled round the country from war to hell and back.
                                       Dm
And he ended up in Katherine, where he died alone and poor,
        G F C
And the copper made the comment, he said he went to war.

[Chorus]
Am G F C
Blackfella ANZAC, he's white enough to take,
         G F C
And he's white enough to risk his life, and die to save his mates
Am G F C
Blackfella ANZAC, thanks for what you gave,
      G F C
But I wish you were remembered, the bravest of the brave

[Verse 4]
                                        Dm
So here's to Frederick Prentice, he's a hero of the war,
    G F C
His name's not on the Cenotaph in Darwin that's for sure.
                            Dm
No military funeral, it was just the two of us,
  G F C
A gravedigger, a copper and only dust to dust.
                                        Dm
But a true son of the territory and the ANZAC lives he saved,
    G F C
But you lie asleep in Katherine in an unmarked grave

[Chorus]
Am G F C
Blackfella ANZAC, and he's white enough to take,
         G F C
And he's white enough to risk his life, and die to save his mates
Am G F C
Blackfella ANZAC, thanks for what you gave,
      G F C
But I wish you were remembered, the bravest of the brave.
        Am G F C
And you lie asleep in Katherine in an unmarked grave
