DOWN BY THE GLENSIDE
written by Peadar Kearney (circa 1916)

Kearney was a member of the Irish Republican Brotherhood, popularly known as the Fenians.
He wrote the song at about the time of the 1916 Rising, referring back to the earlier Fenian Rising of 1867.
It evokes the memory of the freedom-fighters of the previous generation
It is effectively a call to arms for a generation of Irishmen accustomed to political nationalism.

Capo V (Key of Dm)

[Verse 1]
      Am G C Em
'Twas down by the Glenside, I met an old woman
  Am G C Em
A plucking young nettles, she ne'er saw me coming
  Am C G
I listened a while, to the song she was humming
      C G Am G Am
Glory O, Glory O, to the Bold Fenian Men

[Verse 2]
     Am G C Em
It's fifty long years since I saw the moon beamin'
   Am G C Em
On strong manly forms, their eyes with hope gleamin'
  Am C G
I see them again, through all my sad dreamin'
      C G Am G Am
Glory O, Glory O, to the Bold Fenian Men

[Verse 3]
     Am G C Em
Some died by the hillside, some died with a stranger
    Am G C Em
And wise men have told us their cause was a failure
         Am C G
But they loved their old Ireland and never feared danger
      C G Am G Am
Glory O, Glory O, to the Bold Fenian men

[Verse 4]
  Am G C Em
I passed on my way, God be praised that I met her
   Am G C Em
Be life long or short, I will never forget her
   Am C G
We may have brave men, but we'll never have better
      C G Am G Am
Glory O, Glory O, to the Bold Fenian Men

[Verse 5]

      Am G C Em
'Twas down by the Glenside, I met an old woman
  Am G C Em
A plucking young nettles, she ne'er saw me coming
  Am C G
I listened a while, to the song she was humming
      C G Am G Am
Glory O, Glory O, to the Bold Fenian Men
